Chapter 8: Packing, Filling, and Sealing

 

8.1: Packing of Quad Seal Bags

Some complicated but straightforward machines do these packaging, filling and sealing. The type of machine that you are to select will depend on the speed you need, the quantity of work, your facility space and height.

There are two main types of machines used in packaging, filling and sealing.

 

The Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS)

 

Horizontal form fill and seal machine (HFFS)

 

The main difference between the two machines lies in the name. The first one operates vertically and takes less floor space but a higher height length. The latter works horizontally, take up more floor space but a lesser height.

 

These machines can fill and seal about 30 -300 bags per minute, but some can go higher. The speed to experience depends on the quality of the products and the type of products filled in the very quad seal bags.

 

8.2: Filing of Quad Seal Bags

Whether you are to use the HFFS or the VFFS, the filling amount or the discrete tea, coffee or any product are measured and dropped into the bags by fillers. A third-party manufacturer is the one that provides fillers which contain augers to measure the product amount correctly. For example, before the sealing is done, the machines must get rid of oxygen to ensure product shelf longevity and freshness. One of the sealing machine VFFS is highly recommended for sealing coffee. For products which need zero oxygen entrapping, Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is used. The MAP allows unwanted carbon-dioxide to escape before sealing. Secondly, nitrogen gas is sometimes flushed on the bags before filling and sealing to ensure oxygen is wholly displaced.

 

 

Regarding the sealing and filling options, we the following options.

 

 

Continuous VFFS packaging machine

This machine can pack 300 bags per minute of size 50 mm by 90 mm to a maximum of 300 mm by 1000mm. It has a power supply of 6 kVA and 6 bar air pressure. This is one of the high-velocity machines around.

 

Intermittent motion VFFS M500 packaging machine

 

 

For all the big sized quad bags, this is the machine we use. It can fill and seal 70 big bags per minute of size 150 mm by 100 mm minimum size and 500 mm by 600 mm maximum. It requires a power supply of 208-240 V and air requirement of 12-8 SCFM. But, there are intermittent motion VFFS machines.
